Dear Government Leader/Officials,
We represent the voice of the Millennial and Gen Z generations, a cohort raised in the evolution of the digital era, deeply aware of our global history and its many lessons. We write to urge you to reconsider the priorities that shape our world today, advocating for peace, sustainability, and the true practice of democracy.
The Lessons of History: Stop the Bombs
We grew up hearing the harrowing tales of past conflicts, taught rigorously that the horrors of war should not be repeated. Yet, despite these lessons, we find ourselves in a world where the specter of conflict still looms large - with over 65 global conflicts and crises currently ongoing - a number near historical highs - we find ourselves at a critical juncture. We live in a world where humanity is grappling with hunger, sickness and lack of basic shelter. Our first plea is straightforward: we must stop the bombs. War perpetuates cycles of violence, destabilizes communities, and undermines the very essence of democracy.
Redirecting Resources: From War to Sustainability
Moreover, the environmental and societal impacts of allocating substantial funds to military endeavors—a facet often overlooked—directly contradict our global commitment to sustainability. It is disheartening to see significant investments diverted towards the machinery of war, while funding for critical, sustainable infrastructure and public services languishes. We call for a strategic divestment from unsustainable and war-oriented activities, channeling these resources instead into sectors that promote ecological stability and human development. Such a realignment of priorities is essential not only to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change but also to foster a peaceful, prosperous global community.
Urgency of Global Goals: Achieving the SDGs by 2030
Furthermore, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations offer a blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. We find ourselves rapidly approaching the 2030 deadline, with merely 5 years remaining to achieve these targets. Goals such as Quality Education (Goal 4), Affordable and Clean Energy (Goal 7), and Climate Action (Goal 13) are imperatives that can drive our development without the devastation of war. We advocate for global investments in renewable energy projects like wind farms and solar panels, sustainable urban development with efficient public transport and green spaces, and comprehensive public health improvements through well-equipped healthcare facilities and clean water initiatives. These efforts align with our commitment to ensure every community benefits from sustainable infrastructure that supports a healthy, prosperous future.
Ethical Business Practices: Upholding Human Rights
True sustainability in business practices means adhering to ethical labor standards that respect human rights and dignity. Long-term business viability cannot be built on the exploitation of workers or active investments in violations of human rights. Therefore, we insist on enforcing regulations that prohibit unfair labor practices and ensure that no individual, especially the vulnerable and the young, is forced into labor under oppressive conditions. This commitment must be unwavering, reflecting our values of fairness and human decency in every facet of economic activity.
Reevaluating National Priorities: Welfare Over Warfare
In our era, characterized by a wealth of knowledge and democratic ideals, it is paradoxical to witness substantial funds diverted towards conflict while essential public services and investments in our future are deemed less of a priority. We urge a reevaluation of national budgets and policies to reflect a commitment not to warfare, but to the welfare of your citizens and the global community.
Revive Democracy: Ensuring True Representation
As young participants in modern societies, encouraged to engage in the democratic process, we often face a disheartening reality: our electoral choices rarely reflect our values or address our specific needs. This dichotomy not only challenges the integrity of democratic participation but also leads to disillusionment, as many feel that their involvement hardly sways the political trajectory. This situation calls for a critical reassessment of how candidates are selected and how our electoral systems can become truly inclusive, ensuring every voice is heard and accurately represented. Embracing and applying this inclusivity is essential, as it directly supports our collective call for peace, an end to warfare, and investments that protect both our generation and those to come.
The Time to Act Is Now
We, the youth, are not just asking for these changes; we are insisting on them as essential to our rights, our futures, and our planet. Democracy demands participation, and its five pillars—active citizenship, a robust judiciary, a functioning executive, accountable media, and legislative oversight—are principles we wish to see upheld and strengthened, not undermined by conflict or strife.
We are eager to lead by example, to live in a world where our energies are spent in pursuit of innovation, peace, and global collaboration. Let us redirect our resources from the machinery of war to the machinery of hope and progress. Still burning with hope for what the world can become, we look to you, our leaders, to make courageous choices for peace and sustainability.
The time to acknowledge was yesterday. The time to act is now.
Sincerely,
Young minds that are willing to commit their efforts to maintaining peace and sustainability once it is obtained.
