Gateshead have changed the policy for people who require gluten-free products, this is a Gateshead wide policy and is being put in place within every GP Practice within Gateshead. My husband was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease five years ago and has been on a gluten free diet ever since, when he was first diagnosed i was extremely surprised and shocked at the price of Gluten-free foods, I mean a normal loaf of gluten free bread will cost you nearly £2 I must admit i felt at the time, how on earth will we be able to afford these foods. Then someone told me about Pre-payment Prescription Charge Certificate which has been a life saver meaning i can order my husbands bread, pizza bases, savoury biscuits e.t.c. from my local chemist. Now we are told we can only have 18 items per month, one item is a pack of 4 part baked buns, my husband uses 4 per day for work, 5 packs per week, 20 packs per month, but now we are told we can only have 18 items per month, come on Gateshead and anywhere else this silly policy is going to be implemented people with coeliac disease should not be told how often they can have a piece of bread or a pizza or some crackers they should be able to eat when and how often they like, as the cost of buying foods from shops are so high and out of reach for many coeliac sufferers. You must remember this is not some faddy diet or self inflicted. This is a disease which the sufferers have no control or option but to follow this gluten free diet. Please sign this petition against this draconian decision by these GPs
