WE MUST TAKE ACTION. Every year thousands of animals are subjected to abuse and neglect from their owners, but we can make a difference. By implementing harsher punishments against those convicted of animal abuse, we can become one step closer to stopping these unacceptable crimes. Research shows that animal abuse is the first indicator for domestic abuse, so by increasing the severity of animal abuse penalties we can also help stop domestic abuse. In an essay by Susan Gaertner, Ramsey Country Attorney, she says, "First, we can recognize the role animals play as pawns in domestic violence situations and allow restraining orders and orders of protection for animals."
