Against the Solum plans for Redhill station

Solum Regeneration, a partnership between Network Rail and accompany called Kier, are preparing to submit a planning application to build a new supermarket, with parking for huge numbers of cars, next to Redhill station. Their plans include the rebuilding of the Station as well as some residential and retail units and to re-site station parking and taxi ranks to the rear of the station. We believe that this is a poorly thought out plan with regard to the current road system in the centre of Redhill. Through traffic is regularly 'gridlocked', making it difficult for emergency services to get through, as well as making the journeys of local people in cars and buses a nightmare. Adding a large supermarket car park & access road to the busiest part of Redhill would have a completely negative impact on an already over stretched road system. In our opinion, the plans put forward are short sighted, and put the immediate profits to be made from a premium supermarket with a captive consumer base, before the needs of local people as a whole, and the long term developmental well-being of the town. There is also a danger of the character of the area being diluted, to the likeness of other large sprawling local towns such as nearby Crawley. This should not be allowed to happen. There are longer term plans for the local council to re-evaluate the partial one-way system in the area, but we believe any re-development of the station area should be set aside until a proper plan for traffic is finalised. This would allow more 'forward thinking' ideas to emerge with regard to the station area. Please join our petition against the proposed development. More information about the development can be seen at the following web address: www.redhillforward.co.uk Thank you.
