As someone who was subject to math 19B online, I can honestly say that I did not get the experience needed to prepare me for upper division classes. My first rigorous encounter with sequences and series was in 103A, upper division Complex Analysis. In order to understand the material, I had to spend much more time supplementing myself than expected. While it turned out well in the end for me, I do not think that a student should be expected to teach themselves major content from online math classes when they thought that their A indicated proficiency.

I have never taken an online math course at UCSC. Still, many of my incoming 2015 peers do, and there seems to be a universal understanding that cheating isn't taboo in these courses. Why would students respect a math course that doesn't respect them?

I resonate what Professor Mitchell wrote. Students are paying for a lecture and they deserve a complete class.
