There is no way that most students could learn the material in an effective manner from an online class. It's absolutely absurd to me.

These online courses are not anywhere near the equivalent of a course taught by an instructor. Learning vector calculus with a textbook and a few online lecture videos is not helpful. The professor often restates exactly what the book says in the videos, and it is very hard to understand. The examples provided in some of the lecture videos are also very specific and cannot be applied to other homework problems without proper instruction, but since we have never seen the problems before and do not know how to directly apply theorems to them, the videos often seem useless. I was not expecting to pay such a large amount of money to go to a university to take online math courses that students not enrolled at the university can also take, and I am very angry. The school is jeopardizing our learning so they can save space to let more students attend the school so they can make even more money. It is flawed and unfair.

online math 23A did not prepare me at all for 23B. The knowledge that i gained was very basic and i had to accumulate it all myself without assistance from any formal instruction. the "online lectures" were simply the professor repeating exactly what was written in the text book thus offering us no new information or understanding.

Math 23a does not give you a good understanding of the material. It is terrible. I have exhausted so much of my time and effort in this class to get so little out of it.

Online math is basically a "teach yourself" course. For high level concepts such as those in Math 23a, this does not work! I feel my understanding of calculus is lesser than someone who has taken in-person classes, and I don't want others to suffer the same fate.

Having classes online have taught me how to manage my time well. This is probably the only thing I've learned. If it wasn't for the ACE program I don't think I would have passed this class. Not everyone is capable of learning through a computer screen. Overall, I personally had a horrible experience because I finally understand, being in 23B this quarter, that I don't know how to do half of the things I should know how to do. ONLINE CLASSES NEED TO END. We're not learning! Math is essential and we need to have a professor to ask questions during lecture. ONLINE CLASSES NEED TO END.

We should be able to choose online and in class, as some students may need online but the online classes at ucsc do not at all help prepare for courses in the future. They wasted aqay a quarter of mine and left me unprepared for future classes.

Online math is a horrible idea if you're required to get a deep understanding of mathematical concepts for your major. Of course these online classes are good for those individuals, who don't want to spend time learning the material and still get an easy A, but for those who end up going father in mathematics it's absolutely destructive. Once you get into an actual math class, after the online version, it becomes extremely stressful and intense because you come very unprepared and end up spending your entire time on trying to learn everything from the beginning along with new material. And the worst part about this, is that you don't even have a choice of taking a real class whenever the online class if offered. Totally against it.

Giving individual students the choice would be fine with me. Not having the option of a real class is unacceptable. We pay for a real education not to be presented with a website. These math classes are absolutely fundamental to everything STEM students study. We all know online classes are not what a UC education should be.

The online math courses are in no way an adequate substitute for having a professor in front of you explaining the concepts in person. They do not aim to give students a thorough understanding of the material, instead the focus is on getting the right answer. We are paying to attend this university in order to receive a quality education from professors, not to teach ourselves math from a website- we could do that anywhere for free. I think it's fine to have the online version available to students as an option, but not as the only form offered for the course in a given quarter.

Hated the whole process. I never was engaged in math when it was online. It made me unprepared for math used in other courses.
