Mr. President, we the undersigned volunteers, supporters and staff of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention urge you to reduce stigma and prevent suicide by:
(1) Changing the long standing White House policy of not sending condolence letters to the families of military personnel who die in theatre by suicide.
(2) Continuing your support of the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs as they create and implement programs and services to prevent suicide in the active military and among our veterans.
Thank you Mr. President for raising the level of conversation regarding suicide as a serious public health problem and for supporting efforts to prevent loss of life from suicide.

The petition reached the one hundred signature threshold today. I am now preparing a formal letter to the White House to initiate a request for a meeting with the appropriate policy staff.

About time we stop acting like this is a shameful secret. It is a health issue just like anything else. Fix this policy now.
Lost a friend last year and it was awful. We need leadership that actually cares about this loss.
My brother deserved better. This would mean the world to families who are hurting and feel forgotten by the people in charge.
Total support for this. Let's start talking about mental health openly at the highest levels.
So important. The stigma is killing people and this simple gesture could help so many families feel like their loved one mattered.
