As social work advocates, we are interested in expanding the current federal policy on embryonic stem cell research to allow scientists to explore the full promise of this field. With more human embryonic stem cell lines available for federal funding, there will be new opportunities for scientific advancement that will potentially benefit those living with devastating injuries and medical conditions. We support the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005 (HR 810) that was introduced in the House and Senate on February 16, 2005. This legislation provides for federal funding of embryonic stem cell research on lines derived after August 9, 2001, and requires strong ethical guidelines on stem cell lines that are eligible for federally-funded research. Embryonic stem cell research could make a major difference in the fight against many deadly and debilitating diseases, in addition to other serious conditions. Over 3 years after the current federal policy was implemented, there are only 22 embryonic stem cell lines available for federal funding. Research in this area has slowed to pace that is unacceptable. The current federal embryonic stem cell research policy needs to expand to help researchers find a cure for over 100 million Americans who suffer from many deadly and debilitating diseases. We recognize your support of medical research and your desire to help the millions of Americans suffering from disease. We urge you today to continue this commitment by expanding the scope of the current federal policy on human embryonic stem cell research. Mr. President, now is the time to update the current policy. We urge you to remove the current restrictions on human embryonic stem cell research and support the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act (HR 810). Thank you for your consideration.
