Freedom of the press is a misnomer. The press depends on advertising. Once in a while, a news outlet will do something sensational for better circulation, and to expand advertising revenue. The Journal News published a list of firearms license holders in an interactive map. Some of these individuals were domestic violence victims hiding from abusers. Others are law-abiding citizens who wanted nothing more than privacy. At a minimum, the Journal has violated their basic privacy. At worst, the Journal has encouraged domestic violence, gun theft and subsequent firearms crimes by letting would-be aggressors know where victims can be found. Journal advertisers should know that their products might be portrayed in a better light with more responsible news organization.
