Advancing Accesibility at Concord University
Dr. Nutter-Pridgen's social movements class is petitioning Concord University to implement infrastructure to make campus more accessible. Concord University takes pride in being an inclusive and welcoming environment for all students, staff, and visitors. To further enhance this commitment, we propose a series of improvements to the campus’s accessibility infrastructure and support systems. These enhancements would help ensure that individuals with disabilities can navigate the campus with greater ease and independence, especially as we prepare to welcome the new health center.
Proposed Improvements:
- Improved signage on campus indicating accessible routes (e.g., Library, Art Building)
- Routine maintenance checks of automatic door openers and elevators
- An accessible pathway from the front of Woodell to the sidewalk behind Wilson that connects to North and South Towers
- Installation of guardrails on steep pathways
- Repairs to paths that impede wheelchair use
Reasons why this matters:
- 70 million U.S. adults report having a disability (CDC)
- 19.7% of West Virginia residents report having a disability, the highest in the nation (CDC)
- 20% of undergraduates report having a disability (NCES)
These improvements would not only benefit individuals with disabilities but also enhance the overall campus experience for everyone.
Our goal is 100 signatures!
