Addressing Dyslexia in NY Public Schools
Decoding Dyslexia - NY is a grassroots movement led by NY families to address the challenges and struggles we face in obtaining the appropriate reading interventions for our children in NY public schools. We urge our Department of Education and our local policy-makers to address the following topics:
1. Establishing a universal definition and understanding of the term "Dyslexia" within our state education code.
2. Early screening and identification for Dyslexia.
3. Teacher certification and ongoing professional development to include training for Dyslexia and appropriate evidence-based intervention strategies.
4. Appropriate science and evidence based reading interventions for at-risk students and children with Dyslexia in both general and special education programs.
5. Providing access to assistive technology for at-risk students in both general and special education programs.

The feedback I continue to receive from families across the state highlights the urgent need for systemic change in our approach to literacy. I am currently meeting with educational advocates to refine our strategy for presenting these requirements to policy-makers.

The petition has reached one hundred signatures this morning. This initial milestone demonstrates that our concerns regarding reading interventions in New York schools are shared by many others.

It took the school system 4 years to identify and recognize my son has dyslexia and only after a private evaluation that we paid for. This is 4 precious years where he missed out on key supports to build fundamentals in reading.
I completely support this movement. As a reading specialist, I witness daily, to no fault of their own, teachers that do not have the necessary training to intervene with evidence-based strategies to support struggling readers.
My child made it to eight grade before he was diagnosed with dyslexia. That was only because I paid for additional testing outside of the school district. And after I brought that to the school board, they asked me how to teach my child.
Teachers need to be made aware of the signs of dyslexia so they can recommend further testing. My son struggled for 5 years until I scheduled testing for him. Most of his teachers said he'll grow out of his issues. My district didn't even test for dyslexia.
As a Speech Language Pathologist I know how important it is for individuals with dyslexia to have the proper interventions in place. I hope this petition helps children get the proper educational resources they are entitled to.

I had to have my daughter independently tested as the school would not address it. That is ridiculous. Now the fight is getting her the correct teaching method. It is a daily struggle and she has an IEP.

I had to put my 12 year old very intelligent and very dyslexic child in a boarding school 4 1/2 hours away from home to learn to read. No child should have to leave the home to read, no family should have to carry the burden of that expense.
