We, the undersigned students, alumni, and family member's of students of Herron High School present this petition as a means to express our opinion that the students of Herron High School should be allowed a uniform option other than the mandatory, full length khaki pants or the optional uniform skort. We find it unjust that the female students are allowed a uniform bottom (the skort) that is shorter in length (and therefore not as hot), while the male students are restricted to wearing only the khaki pants. These uniform pants (which are not even allowed to be rolled up to provide less coverage) are not made from a breathable material- are rather uncomfortable on hot days, which are common during the beginning and end of the school year, as well as during Summer Academy.

We are asking that you consider adding a third option to the dress code- a pair of uniform khaki shorts. This option would be greatly appreciated by students that commute to Herron High School by walking, biking, skateboarding, etc, in the warmer months, as well as the students whose classes may choose to meet outside during the warmer months.

Additionally, in the name of equality, we would appreciate it if students of all genders and gender identities were offered khaki shorts, as well as the option to wear a skort. We find it unjust that some students are offered a certain option when it comes to the dress code, whereas others are not (especially when this certain option can provide more comfort).

On the eleventh of August, 2015, you may see some male students wearing the uniform skort. These students are doing so in order to protest what we see as unfair regulations put in place by the administration of Herron High School, as well as to stay cool on a summer’s day that’s predicted to be about 90 degrees. Please take this in consideration if you choose to punish these students- they are wearing the skorts as a means to incite change, not as a joke or act of thoughtless insubordination.
