Add "gender identity" and/or "gender expression" to Moraine Valley's non-discrimination policy
To the Moraine Valley Community College Board of Directors and Trustees:
Moraine Valley Community College needs to include “gender identity” and/or “gender expression” among the list of characteristics protected from discrimination regarding opportunities, programs, and employment in the Non-Discrimination Policy. This policy improvement is a vital stepping stone in the path of becoming a more welcoming community. Not only LGBTQ students, but also faculty and staff at MVCC experience discrimination and oppression. These are the unheard voices at Moraine Valley, and this is the student-initiated response to the injustice that affects the dignity of every member of the MVCC community.
We feel that Moraine Valley Community College strives to create equality and a welcoming environment for all students, staff, and faculty, but is hypocritical in its lack of protection of part of the LGBTQ community from certain forms of discrimination. The Mission Statement addresses respect and true diversity acceptance as core values of the College, but is inadequate as a source of reliable protection or security for many students, staff, and faculty. We expect the Board of Directors and Trustees to address this issue and revise the Non-Discrimination Policy as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
The Students of Moraine Valley Community College
