If you are displeased with the plan to roll back the level of academic achievement for our kids then you can voice your opinion to the school board which is meeting *TODAY* (Monday, March 10) 6pm at 25 Orinda Way Suite 200. This is an open meeting where citizens can speak out.

There is no real conflict between offering common core and differential classes. Other school district, states and countries do. Why can't OIS?

Honors Math is an essential program to keep children who are interested in math engaged and challenged and to prepare them for science, math and engineering degrees. Orinda Schools should be setting the highest standard of education for our children; they should be proactively finding ways to raise the bar, not to lower it.

The biggest challenge facing Orinda is the loss of local control. Orinda should be run by Orindans! We Orindans pay taxes for schools, roads, and other governmental activities. Over the last four or more years, Orinda has lost control over its own city -- a city which is being given federal and state mandates on the type of housing and schools the city should have. The Orinda City Council is caving in to plans to build high-rise, high-density housing ("stack-and-pack housing). Orinda has terrible parking and traffic problems, yet the city authorizes more real estate development. Now, the independence of Orinda's schools is in jeopardy. External authorities are telling us what kinds of light bulbs and shower heads to buy. The next step is that outside entities will tell Orindans how to run their lives. Orindans must be able to vote on any substantive changes to their wonderful city. But the city council will not allow such voting. The people of Orinda know more about running the city's schools than any outside entities. No external curriculum should ever be imposed -- without the consent of Orinda's voters -- on the city's students. Orindans must be able to have the final word on any substantive changes to school curricula.

I'm in total agreement that common core should be the base. This is just another example of our education system dumbing down. Our society ultimately suffers when we do not allow the highest achievers to live and learn to their potential.
