The university has officially agreed to adjust the shuttle bus routes to better serve the Kinsmen Building during late evening hours. This change ensures that students no longer have to navigate poorly lit paths alone after dark. We will monitor the implementation of these new stops in the coming weeks …

With the university taking a stance on student safety. The Social Work
Student Association is proposing changes to the shuttle bus route
through out the Keele campus. The Social Work program is one that is
critical and based on social justice. It is a program that is attended
by majority female students, having said this, all students regardless
of gender should be taken care of. Students at the School of Social Work
are required to walk a long and unlit walk back to the main campus from
the Kinsmen Building. At times there are large numbers of students
required to walk back to the main campus beyond 10PM. Furthermore, with
fall starting and winter not far behind, it will begin to become darker
earlier. The Kinsmen building is situated in an at-risk area where it is
located across from a wooded area. As mentioned before, lighting is a
problem as it is a poorly lit area, both around the building and the
routes students can take to walk back to campus. In addition, at this
time, there are no protocols or action plans put in place for when a
student may need assistance while on their route back to the campus as
there aren’t any emergency buttons or devices on any of the routes.
There have been incidents at the co-op building beside Kinsmen building
which also raises concerns and more questions as to why the safety of
Social Work Students and others who come this way are not being placed
as a priority. We, the students, pay tuition like any other student at
York University; we would like our tuition money to be put towards
ensuring optimal safety. Within the Kinsmen building, we also do not
share the same benefits as other buildings (in terms of the TV screen
which details events, weather warnings, and other important
information). We are isolated at the Kinsmen building and York
University should strive to create an inclusive atmosphere where
everyone is ensured belonging as well as safety. We, the students and
other supporters, are asking York University to continue its trend of
focusing on campus safety and ensuring all students from across the
campus feel safe and have equal access to safety. We would like the
Kinsmen Shuttle bus stop to be put back into service as well as having
appropriate response times in regards to walking patrol when needed (in
between the shuttle bus service times).

results of the petition to the university.

Walking back from kinsmen at night is honestly terrifying. There is zero light and the walk feels way too long when you are by yourself.

About time. I've been saying for years that the lighting over there is horrible. Hope they actually listen this time.

Seriously fix the shuttle route. It would take them 5 minutes to change it and it would actually make us feel safe.

This area is so sketchy at night. why is there no security or emergency buttons anywhere near the building?

My girlfriend is in that program and she is always scared to walk back late. Just add the stop already.
