As members of Cosmetologists Chicago, owners of America’s Beauty Show (traditionally the Midwest Beauty Show), we are working salon owners and professionals concerned about the recent announcement by the Professional Beauty Association/National Cosmetology Association (PBA/NCA) of its intention to launch a salon industry event in Rosemont, IL within two weeks of our scheduled 2011 America’s Beauty Show at McCormick Place Chicago.

As salon professionals, we view the timing of this launch as a predatory attempt by the industry's suppliers to usurp the independent voice of salon owners and professionals and to divide the marketplace.

As customers of many of the manufacturer and distributor members of PBA/NCA, we are disappointed that another salon industry association would so blatantly attempt to undermine our 86-year-old established rite of spring for thousands and thousands of salon professionals.

America’s Beauty Show, the Midwest Beauty Show, has been held annually in the spring since 1924. Throughout those many years, it has funded the growth and protection of our profession and industry.

Our beauty show has been, and continues to be, our major source of education, products and fashion innovation.

Because we support fair competition in any market, we respectfully request that PBA/NCA move its proposed event to non-competing dates later in the year. Our association would welcome the opportunity to work with PBA/NCA on an event in fall 2011 that would be mutually beneficial to the associations, the exhibitors and especially our fellow professionals.

We urge PBA/NCA to reconsider immediately its decision to launch this event before it causes any further confusion or damage to the industry and its practitioners.

I have been hearing from so many of you about how confusing this whole situation feels because why would they try to split the show when we have all been working together for decades. It honestly feels like they are just ignoring the history behind the event at McCormick Place but they are going to have to listen eventually because the industry is way too tight knit for them to just slide in there like this.

Seeing all this movement makes me realize we really are not alone in feeling this is a direct attack on our community and our history. I remember staring at the screen when I first typed this out thinking nobody would actually care but now it feels like the whole industry is finally waking up to what is happening right in front of us.

Total garbage. These big companies just want to control everything and push out the smaller guys. Chicago stands behind ABS.

86 years of history vs some greedy corporate move. Really hope they rethink this because its a slap in the face to every stylist in the midwest.

ABS has been a tradition for so long. Dont mess with what already works perfectly fine just because you want more money. Leave our show alone!
