On Monday the 27th of March, new rules were brought into place at AB Paterson college. These are: 1. That all students must spend the first 15 minutes of lunch times in a supervised house eating area before being released to normal lunch. 2. That all ipods and other music players are banned at school and on the way to and from school. These new rules will create an unneccessary and unproductive drain on the morale of students and will do nothing to promote school spirit or appropriate behaviour. Instead of putting these rules into place, the school should take more reasonable measures. Suggested replacements for these rules are: 1. Any teacher may ask any student to pick up any piece of rubbish during morning tea or lunch. If the student fails to comply with this request they may be immediately referred to HOH for an automatic detention. 2. Year 11 students may sign up for "Rubbish Duty" at lunch times, which would involve picking up litter around the school. Each lunchtime would count as one of their required hours of community service. 3. Ipods would be permitted during morning tea and lunch, but any student using a music player in class without teacher permission would be referred to HOH for an automatic weekend detention or other suitable punishment. These changes will appropiately deal with school issues such as litter without angering or discouraging the student body. To the staff of AB Paterson College: We, the undersigned, petition that the new rules regarding lunch time seating and music players be immediately revoked and, if neccessary, replaced with the more reasonable rules suggested above.
