Agree on all points. Very subjective inspections from one station to the next. Puts a hefty price on lower income citizens who may drive older vehicles from the 90s or 80s.

This program is a fraud. I always have a second inspection done to verify needed repair. The two inspections have never been the same, always different. My horn wasn’t loud enough and the “inspector” tried to charge me $175. I had it fixed for $30.

I just joined your club, not because of dealer perfidy or consumer cost burden, but because the new mandated location of the inspection sticker unsafely obscures my view of the road and the edges and "landmarks" of my car.
The high contrast sticker is distracting in the bargain - it clutters the clear view out of the windshield.
Windshields are so variable that an out of the way placement is not always possible in conformation with the new regulation. For example, I have a wagon-like crossover vehicle with a long hood, and every bit of the windshield is needed for clear view. There is a wide black curving border at the base/corners of the windshield.
I am really put out - it's a hazard - and I am getting headaches straining to look around the sticker. It never fades away because of the high contrast.
Virginia also changed the type of sticker so that the owner cannot reposition it. even the inspector tore chunks out of the sticker front, trying to apply it. The adhesive is damaging. Isn't there some better way ? Can't cars without autonomous technology keep their sticker in the unobtrusive middle? The only reason not to allow this would seem to be a desire to make it easier for law enforcement to spot a bad sticker. I don't think the autonomous technology explanation really withstands scrutiny, and I don't really think they appreciate the new obstruction hazard. Up until recently, it was illegal for any Virginian to have any kind of sticker in that position - for the very reason that it blocked a clear view out of the windshielf.

only 16 states in the union require safety inspections, are the other states including Maryland really putting their drivers at risk? I think not.

I have been a Virginia state safety inspector and I understand the need to keep things in order but I also understand that it is useless in the state of Virginia because we are still having accidents whether we are doing inspections or not
