We are circulating a petition regarding the Charleston Historic District Bed and Breakfast Ordinance. The current B and B regulations stipulate that your house must be built before 1860 in order to legally rent out a bedroom in your home for less than 30 days. This date is arbitrary and discriminatory and does not provide the same rights to all homeowners within the same neighborhood. Although our home meets off-street parking and all other valid requirements, we are deprived of the ability to rent one room in our home to a short-term guest because our home was built in 1905. We are asking City Council to abolish this arbitrary date in the Historic District Bed and Breakfast Ordinance in order to allow homeowners the ability to legally host paying guests in their personal residences.
