My daughter participates in FCHS band program, and I want her to have a qualified band director. This band director deserves a competitive salary package, to include the stipend.

As a former FCPS music teacher, I agree with every point in this position. Music contributes to so many positive things in a student’s life. They deserve the best possible person for the job of Band Director. And to hire that person the salary and the stipend needs to be competitive.

Music programs have been proven time and time again to be extremely beneficial for students, and schools as a whole. A simple google search will provide more than enough evidence supporting the benefits of investing in music education.
The marching band program at FCHS in particular is an essential part of the school's legacy and in many years has been highly respected and acclaimed. It's simply a no-brainer that this program should continue to be supported appropriately so the students and school as a whole may flourish. As an alumni, my high school experience was defined by participation in music programs, which gave me the enthusiasm and inspiration to keep coming to school and excel academically.
Every band director, music teacher, etc. I have ever met has demonstrated a total dedication to going above and beyond their job duties to create the most fulfilling experience and education for their students possible, and all they ask in return is adequate funding. Please understand that music means more to some of these kids than you can ever understand, and in many cases even saves lives. INVEST in your new band director and give them the tools to help FCHS shine as a beacon of light for the students and community as a whole.

I am class in 2012 and I played the clarinet for 10 years and was in the colorguard in the marching band. The music program is so important ! I support this 110%!!

I feel that it is unfair to us students and our teachers who try so hard to make our band the best we can, to constantly have to fight for the same opportunities that are given to others here at FCHS. Even though I am just a student, it seems that the reason the teachers keep leaving is because FCHS doesn’t treat them as well as other places. They tell us it’s for better opportunities that they leave, why can’t you offer them those better opportunities to stay?

The ESSA act, states that music is part of a well rounded education. My child loves music, it is a motivating aspect that allows him to put up with all the chaos and ugliness that is public high school. Unfortunately he has not had the same music/ band teacher two years in a row while attending Fluvanna County public schools.. we have a serious problem, it seems, with keeping quality educators in the these positions, why?? It has been shown unequivocally that music programs help with all others areas to include, math, reading, social skills, language, and even high school graduation and attendance rates. So why does this continue to be a problem area in our county? Simply stated, fix this by offering the prospective band teacher fair and equitable compensation to reflect all the hours and work they provide our kids and give my musical student the same opportunities that you give other programs here in Fluvanna.

I am a guard parent and I have noticed over the last 2 years is that the quiet and sky students overcome that. They are now engaged with the other students and feel more confident performing and talking in public. The are open to speak up and not feel shy. If they make a mistake, then just let it roll off their back and keep going. I know that my daughter and a few other girls that started when she did are a different person because of this program. This program has made such a difference in these students lives. We need a director that can build on what is there and fight for these students and that will stay. The new contract needs to entice the person instead of scare them off.

Music is so important and my student has benefited from the amazing programs he's been a part of thus far as well as from the leadership and encouragement from Mr. Strickler and Mr. Hable. It is very discouraging that our school is once again having to fill this important role. I hope that our school district is willing to offer a competitive package to any potential new hire for this role to attract not just a body to fill the spot, but a quality candidate who will continue to support the students, and the growth and development of the students and the program that we have seen in our bands and particularly in the marching band over the past 10-15 years.

Thanks so much for doing this. The impact of this program is quite extensive academically and personally for each of these students. It's a shame that historically academia doesn't appreciate the value of the academic and extracurricular music program, in addition to the time and effort the directors and students put forth, relative to their sports programs. I hope one day that they have a change of heart and see the value in all students interests, gifts and talents.

I would hope that the we look and compare the duties of the Band Directory to other extra correctular areas. The Band director never really has an off season and their their influence is great. They help mentor and help prep our kids for college and future auditions, they help build the concepts and opportunity to learn and how how to lead, and also how to take direction. So I would hope the powers involved the search will understanding that must offer something competitive. We must offer a competitive package to get the right person.

Thanks for preparing this petition. My son who loves music more than anything else had one different music teacher every year, he may give up Marching Band, motivation is low and even the most resilient students have a breaking point. Furthermore in the middle of a pandemic year FCHS has managed to loose two music directors. This will impact the Marching Band for years to come.

Band (in particular marching band) has played an important role in my life. The values and work ethics I learned as both a student and instructor (for decades) has played an important part in shaping who I am. It is paramount that this program is not pushed to the side and the students left in the wake.
