A Statutory Register for Architectural Technologists in Ireland

Pleaase support CIAT who have have made a submission to the minister and his department, seeking the establishment of a register which will allow Architectural Technologists to provide full design and assigned certification and will sit alongside the existing registers for Architects, Building Surveyors and Chartered Engineers, not below those registers.

Sounds good Shane.... but does the current position not involve getting AT's onto the Building Surveyor register?? and the register of our own an aspiration for after that??

Is there a current proposal by CIAT to set up an independent Register of our own? Or are we/they just hoping to get us lumped in with Building Surveyors?? If I wanted to get on the Building Surveyor Register why couldn't I go down the MCIOB route and not wait for CIAT to get approval?

Please remove my signature from the petition. It appears that this petition has been generated by the RIAI to get control of the Profession of Architectural Technologists which will sound the death knell of the profession. The RIAI have spent the past 30 years trying to limit the scope of work carried out by Architectural Technologists and they are not going to change their attitude now. This petition appears to be a direct response to CIAT's endeavors to have a register of Chartered Architectural Technologists set up to protect the future of the profession of architectural Technologists.

I fully agree with Gillian's comment, especially in light of the recent RIAI News Alert on the creation of an RIAI register. It is carefully worded to avoid any mention of AT's performing in a design or assigned certifier role while making it seem like we as AT's can provide a full service. Under an RIAI register Architectural Technologist's will be restricted to provided ancillary certification services ONLY. I agree with Gillian and Denise. CIAT is the only way to go now for technicians / technologists, i received an email from RIAI today ; RIAI will set up an RIAI Register of Architectural Technologists immediately. RIAI acknowledges and will support the need for a Statutory Register of Architectural Technologists. RIAI will promote such a statutory Registered Architectural Technologist as a competent person to: (a) Carry out Performance Calculation & Technical Design in accordance with Building Regulations (b) Certify Performance Calculation and Technical Design carried out in accordance in Building Regulations (c) Inspect the construction of buildings as required to certify compliance with Building Regulations The RIAI will support the development and establishment of an Architectural Technologist Register Admissions Examination (ATRAE) for purposes of entry to the Statutory Register of Architectural Technologists. The examination should be at a level which recognises the education, experience and skills of the Architectural Technologist. RIAI will develop and establish an RIAI Code of Conduct and a Professional Conduct Committee for professional practice as a Registered Architectural Technologist. Unfortunately the implication here is that the RIAI considers Architectural Technologists as competent persons to carry out the inspections but not to certify as in (c) , so that means not been assigned certifier's .

I agree with Gillian's comments in relation to the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists CIAT being in an ideal position to set up and run a register. Also Architectural Technologists are well suited to be registered alongside the RIAI, Chartered Engineers and Chartered Surveyors.

I agree with Gillian that the CIAT (MCIAT designation) is probably the way to go as they are recognized internationally.. Is there really a need for an Irish charter, im not sure there is , the instant it is founded it would be vital that it achieves equal /automatic membership of CIAT. I commend the petition but there is no need to link it to CIF or request the minister to set up registration for Irish Technologists when builders are to be registered next year, what's the connection with builders? if we are to be "assigned certifiers" operating independently we should not be seen to be linked to builders registration or CIF, -Technologist sign the petition ,it will certainly focus the minds but its not the right direction. We need to be completely independent of the RIAI as our qualifications offer a different perspective , a move to new technologies and a new and more innovative than heretofore. ml quirke, Architectural Technologist.

There is currently a route to the Building Surveyor register. CIAT have memorandums of understanding with the CIOB and CABE, chartered architectural technologists (MCIAT) can progress to the Building Surveyor register through those institutes.

Any statutory register of Architectural Technologists must be independent of the RIAI whose main interest is to protect it's architect it's architect members. For the RIAI to run a statutory register of architectural technologists would be create a conflict of interest. The Charter Institute of Architectural Technologists, CIAT, an internationally recognized institute of architectural technologists for architectural technologists is in a an ideal position to set up and run such a register.

Gillian, the RIAI had no part to play in the establishment of this petition. This is purely about the principle of the need for Statutory recognition of the skills of AT's, and to bring sharper context to the debate in the Dail today. Just for today, let's leave the CIAT / RIAI divide aside and let this be just about architectural technology. The detail can be debated and decided upon once the principle has been established, and I would expect that everybody would fight their corner if and when that comes about. For today, lets just send a clear message to the Minister who has ignored ALL of us.

Hi James, Yes, CIAT have submitted a proposal to the Dept. of Environment for the establishment of a CIAT operated register, which will be open to all competent professionals, not just CIAT members. A CIAT operated register will allow for AT's to provide Design and Assigned Certifier services.
