A Request for UCL to change their current stance on assessments

Completely agree with this statement. UCL must act in favor of its students.

This is a pandemic, UCL has to act and has to safeguard the mental health of their students. This shall only be done by either retaking the entire year OR cancelling further examinations and coursework until the pandemic situation has stopped.

I’m back home in a small town and the wifi is honestly terrible, how am I meant to do this properly with no support?

As an engineering student I believe having examinations given the circumstances is complicated even if they were to be online. I am much more ooen to taught of additional coursework to allow for a less stressful scenario while allowing us to prove that we can and have master the subject at hand.

I am very much for the some kind of compensation as too much of school had been missed - we did not sign up for online classes or no classes at all. I understand that Covid-19 is an unprecedented event that UCL is not responsible for but making the assessments significantly easier would be greatly appreciated by all students. I completely am against taking away the assessments because 1. that is unfair to UCL 2. it would place much more emphasis on other academic years and thus would not be in the interest of students either. Thus I ask for two things, 1. compensation for the lack of classes this term (and even in previous terms) - the amount stated in this petition is extremely reasonable (4 weeks of tuition fee) 2. assessments to be made easier and marked more leniently since this is a difficult time for everyone. I firmly believe that we are subject to some form of compensation, ALL of us. Not selectively, like the Learning Opportunities Fund, which by the way was not advertised widely. Even corona set aside, students graduating this year, including myself, have been greatly disadvantaged by THREE strikes, losing almost a full term of learning by itself. International students have basically wasted around £7000 of tuition fees or much more just because of this. I come from an average household, so this is not an amount I can just shrug off. Even during the strikes, I had to pay rent that was earned through me working, and I still have to do so now. I and my parents paid the tuition and other expenses required, with the expectation that the university will provide me with the education and resources I deserve. I understand that this is a very difficult, unprecedented circumstance that many of the staff are trying their best to manage, but I also hope the university will understand that by providing a refund, although it may not solve all problems, it will greatly alleviate overall pressure students are experiencing from the disruptions.

As a maths student, I’m extra stressed about the situation that we might have to take an online exam. It is extremely hard for us to write down the solutions online, and most of our lectures have been cancelled beforehand due to the strike. Moreover, some of the lecturers do not even care to upload online lectures, they just uploaded lecture notes and are expecting us to understand everything by ourselves. Having a maths degree is well known for being challenging, especially more so from UCL which is one of the best universities in the world.
