As the school year approaches, I have been thinking more and more about my children's experience the past two years at American Academy regarding treats and candy served in school. I am a proponent of occasional treats which are, of course, part of childhood. What concerns me is the frequency with which these treats are being offered to our kids for birthdays, class parties, school sanctioned rewards etc..... I amhopingto get the school administration on board to find alternative ways to celebrate birthdays instead of sugary cookies and donuts. I don't know about you but last year my kids were being offered these types of things multiple times a week and sometimes multiple times a day. I am not advocating that we eliminate treats at holiday parties although perhaps we could find a way to include some healthier options at those too!

I am a strong believer that food and diet correlate with learning and a child's ability to focus. At a school that puts such an emphasis on academic achievement it would be wonderful to see equal emphasis on our children's health and food education as well. Many other neighborhood and charter schools in Douglas County including but not limited to Aspen View Academy, SkyView Academy, and Challenge to Excellence Charter School have already adopted such policies because they feel that sugary treats distract from learning and negatively impact the academic culture of the school.

I can't do this alone and I would LOVE your support by signing this petition to bring about some much needed change for the well-being of our children and our school as a whole. We all want our children to feel special on their birthday (and all the time) but I believe that we can do it in a more balanced, nutritious and creative way.
