I enthusiastically support your continued development of a systematic collection of genome sequences from exemplar strains of Salmonella, to capture diversity within and between serovars, to sequence outbreak strains, antibiotic resistant strains, and strains of interest to clinical labs in the developing world. Your generation and prompt public release of Salmonella genome sequences has been of great assistance to the community. With the advent of high-throughput sequencing, this greatly expanded resource will be a cost-effective and valuable resource both for understanding the worldwide epidemiology of Salmonella, and to develop tools for understanding evolution at the population level and at the interface between population biology and phylogeny.

The feedback from labs worldwide confirms that open access to these genome sequences is vital for tracking outbreaks. I am currently working to organize the next phase of data releases.
