I call on the Russian government to release, not only these Mathematics students, but all others who have been taking part in peaceful demonstrations. It is a terrible sign of lack of government confidence to engage in such acts, and it severely damages the reputation on Russia in the eyes of the world.

It seems Russia learned nothing from the dark Soviet past. Once again decent, honest, brilliant citizens are being detained, arrested, and otherwise persecuted, for peacefully disagreeing with the tyrannical regime, for exercising their civic duty of standing up for people's rights and freedoms. The arrests, the beatings, the persecution, need to stop, and those detained need to be released immediately. Release Ilya Dumanski Release Alexey Piskunov Release Alexander Popkovich Release others who were detained for participating in the peaceful protests.

I call for the immediate release of our young colleagues, Ilya DUMANSKI, Alexei PISKUNOV and Alexander POPKOVICH and Vasili MOKIN. (This list is probably incomplete.) I am horrified to see the growing machine of repression in today’s Russia. The consequences for the entire Russian mathematical community are potentially catastrophic.
