Lampedusa has become a graveyard for Africans escaping different forms of injustice from the continent of Africa. This tragedy like others which have gone investigated could have been avoided or atleast mitigated. As Africans, we feel sometimes powerless in the face of endless tragedies that has enguled our existence as a people. Yet we refuse to accept that such a tragedy will not evoke the conscience of humanity to action.
Lampedusa was not simply an accident. Consistent reports have suggested negligence and possible complicity in the death of hundreds of Africans. This is not the first time Africans have been killed under circumstances which remain suspicious to this day. As the United Nations Secretary General argues and correctly, "We should treat migrants the way we want our own people treated when we go abroad"

The right to seek and to receive asylum confers with it an obligation on States to ensure access and to treat applicants with dignity.

The need for an international investigation under the United Nations supervision to establish the facts about what happened is urgent.

I sign in support for an international investigation on the tragedy in Lampedusa.
