Oppose a public pay parking lot at Waverly Belmont Elementary

A couple of more reasons:
1. Removing a well-used green space will damage the wellbeing of neighbors and go against neighborhood sentiment (and planning officials’ views) as reflected in the 2008 12th Avenue South Detailed Neighborhood Design Plan. This plan is not binding, but it deserves to be taken seriously since it resulted from land use policy workshops and an intensive series of community meetings with back and forth between the planning office and residents. The 2008 Design Plan called for that space to be preserved as green space for the neighborhood.
2. The space is question is actively used as a green space by the neighborhood, is growing in popularity, and is distinguished by its trees, historic low stone walls, and overall unique character. The loss of trees alone will be sorely felt in an area undergoing rapid development. Just this week, three trees on a lot abutting the green space were removed to make way for a new duplex. Now, in the winter, I see dozens of people a day using the area (walk dogs, practicing golf swings, etc). Many of these come from the apartment building and houses that abut the green space, but include folks from the surrounding neighborhood area as well.

Thank you for signing the petition to oppose the plans to build a public pay parking lot at the Waverly Belmont Elementary school. The 12South Neighborhood Association held a meeting on this issue last Tuesday, Feb. 10. During the meeting, 12SNA President Paula Foster stated that the board would be soliciting feedback from neighbors and counting the number of emails or letters they got in support or opposition to this plan.
Please take just a moment to email the 12South Neighborhood Association at [email protected] and share your views with them. Also, please speak with your neighbors and encourage them to get involved by signing the petition and emailing the neighborhood association.
Finally, there is another meeting on this project scheduled for next week. At this meeting, members of the MNPS School Board will be in attendance, as well as Metro Council reps and the Metro Planning Commission. This is your chance to speak to the actual decision makers on this project, so it is important to attend.
