HB2439 is Detrimental to Texas Cities

Texans are an independent people and our Texas cities must be allowed - and encouraged - to govern ourselves!

Please Veto

As I see it, the I-Codes are written to help the Local building official "provide a minimum acceptable level of protection to life and property." (2015 IBC Page 1-2.) Building codes are Not a set of standards for city planning, aesthetics, community design, sense of place, or architectural style. That is what Local zoning ordinances, planners and design professionals are for. Please Veto this bill and allow building codes and zoning ordinances to perform their intended, separate functions. Why should these decisions not be left to the local communities?

We have put many hours into the development regulations that govern our city. Please do not strip us of control of our built environment. I respectfully request that you VETO this bill so that local communities can develop and enforce their own standards.

This Bill is exceptionally wrong. All you need to do is travel through other countries and see the short and long term affects of non-regulated construction.

As an architect I strongly oppose this bill. The bare minimum isn't what Texas is about, it's about progress and moving forward as leaders in all that we do. This legislation is lazy.

Dear Governor Abbott, The bill will have unforeseen circumstances preventing local governments the inability to require exterior building materials such as brick, stone, and other masonry we all see on our buildings including historical structures. Not a good idea. Cities should have control over this. As long as they don't descriminate, and as long as changes by the city only affect future construction or significant remodels.

As an Architect and an individual I value the character of unique districts and recognize that coherent design and building materials are crucial in creating that unique feel. A strong 'sense of place' translates to increased public interest and economic development. People want to shop, dine, live, work, and play in areas of unique character. Local governments are best suited to guide development in their own jurisdictions and this bill will prevent them from doing that. It will also open the door for property owners to undermine the character of the neighborhood by selecting building materials that are not in keeping with the rest of the district. Please veto this bill and allow local governments to pass and enforce ordinances that foster the character of their unique local districts and neighborhoods.

Governor Abbott, this bill is bad for Texas communities, please veto this bill!

This bill will jeopardize lives with little to no building codes enforcement. This bill takes away local governments rights to oversee their communities which the locals voted into position. Why is Texas becoming a big government at the state level? We can do better than that.

I oppose this bill. It’s government overreach by the state and does not appear to benefit the local governments in any way.

I urge Governor Abbot to veto this bill. Local governments have a responsibility to respond to the wishes of local citizens.

Please VETO this! Austin does not need to start controlling what building materials are used in municipalities. Also, the money people behind this bill (builders) only care about their profits. They are not there for the long haul!
