Strengthening the Bond Between Virginia University of Lynchburg and Its Alumni & Students

We, the undersigned Alumni, current students and the Class of 2025 of Virginia University of Lynchburg (VUL), write to you with deep respect and a vested interest in the ongoing success and growth of our esteemed institution. As dedicated alumni and soon-to-be graduates, we are committed to enhancing the legacy of VUL and ensuring its continued excellence. To that end, we seek to address critical areas that require immediate attention and collaborative solutions.
1. Alumni Engagement & Representation
Alumni are an integral part of any university’s growth and sustainability. We request the formal establishment of an Alumni Advisory Board with voting rights or active participation in university decision-making processes. By ensuring that alumni have a voice and a seat at the table, VUL can benefit from the vast experience, insights, and resources that we bring.
2. Student Representation
Students deserve representation at all levels of university governance. We urge VUL to include student representatives in administrative committees, strategic planning discussions, and policy development to foster transparency and inclusivity.
3. Alumni Association & Newsletter
The creation of a robust Alumni Association is paramount to maintaining engagement and fostering continued relationships among graduates. A regularly published alumni newsletter would serve as a vital tool to keep alumni informed, celebrate achievements, and promote university initiatives.
During the Class of 2024 Commencement Ceremony, an individual introduced herself as the “VP of the National VUL Alumni Chapter” while distributing business cards with this title. Additionally, a Facebook group titled VUL DHA National Alumni Chapter was created. These actions led to the impression that a formally recognized Alumni Chapter had been established with VUL’s authorization. However, this was not the case.
Further confusion arose when some individuals were removed from the Facebook group without cause by its administrator. Meanwhile, the promised Fall 2024 organizing meeting never materialized, adding to the uncertainty. The only official information received thus far is that VUL has “voted” to establish an Alumni Chapter, with President Franklin being the designated VUL officer overseeing its jurisdiction. We respectfully request further clarification.
4. Alumni Donations & Giving Back
Many alumni are eager to contribute financially to the university but lack clear avenues to do so. We recommend establishing transparent, dedicated donation channels with clear impact reports to encourage alumni to give back meaningfully. Additionally, many alumni are willing to volunteer their time, expertise, and resources to support VUL initiatives, mentor students, and contribute to university projects. Creating structured volunteer programs would allow alumni to give back beyond financial contributions, fostering a stronger community of support.
5. Alumni Opportunities in Online Teaching
Many accomplished alumni are willing to contribute to VUL’s academic mission by serving as adjunct faculty or guest lecturers. A structured process for alumni to teach online courses would enhance the academic offerings while leveraging their expertise.
6. Graduation Planning & Input
Graduation is a pivotal moment for students and their families. We request that graduating students have a formal role in planning commencement activities, ensuring that the event reflects the collective interests of the student body.
7. Campus Safety & Security
The safety and security of students, faculty, and visitors should be a top priority. We request a comprehensive review and enhancement of campus security measures, including increased campus lighting, security personnel, and emergency response protocols.
8. Alumni Networking, Testimonials, & Marketing
A stronger alumni network enhances the university’s reputation and student success. VUL should actively engage alumni in providing testimonials, mentorship programs, and networking opportunities to strengthen the VUL community. Additionally, better marketing efforts leveraging alumni success stories can help elevate the institution’s public profile. We currently have an active Facebook Group of over 400 alumni, current students, and members of the Class of 2025 (future alumni) who are eager to spearhead these initiatives and further strengthen the connection between VUL and its graduates.
9. Dedicated Alumni/Student Support Contact Person
A designated alumni and student support liaison within the administration would facilitate communication and provide a consistent point of contact for inquiries, grievances, and support services.
10. Direct Contact with the School Board & Student Grievances
There is currently no transparent method for students and alumni to address concerns directly with the School Board. We request the establishment of a formal process for students and alumni to communicate grievances and suggestions effectively.
Conclusion
VUL has a rich history and a bright future, but to continue thriving, it must evolve in collaboration with its alumni and students. We are eager to work together to implement these changes and enhance the experience for all past, present, and future members of the VUL community. We look forward to your response and the opportunity to engage in a constructive dialogue for the betterment of our alma mater.
Respectfully,
Alumni, Current Students and Members of the Class of 2025
