PETITION TO CITY COUNCIL ON SHORELINE MASTER PLAN UPDATE

The City of Kirkland's SMP proposal is completely unreasonable and would be a major loss to homeowners. The only justification provided by the city is environmental and curb appeal. I care deeply about the environment, but I don't see these drastic measures the City is proposing providing a meaningful gain. The cost to Kirkland homeowners property value and rights greatly exceeds any benefit to the environment.

While the City Planners proposing these changes have the best of intentions, the assumption appears to be that the more restrictive the regulations, the better it is for the environment. In fact, no one cares more about the Lake Washington ecosystem than the residents that live along it, and all that is being requested here is smart updates that do not unreasonably burden property owners for future benefits that are unmeasurable and speculative at best.

The city plan is crazy, ridiculous, and crap!

I have shared my comments with Ms Lieberman Brill, the Planning Commission and the City Mayor and Council. I agree with the Petition.

I live on the Lake in the Annexation Area. Many of these changes are significant and ill-advised. We need more/better partnership between the City Staff and the Waterfront Users and Homeowners prior to drafting and enacting significant changes like those in this Update.

I fully support this petition. It is unconscionable that Kirkland planners are trying to take away property rights, not investigating and using correct science in their reports, creating issues that downgrade and lower property values and unfairly restrict the use and enjoyment of the homeowners, their guests and is not equally enforced in all parts of the City. The recommendations of this petition should be accepted by the City of Kirkland Planning Department and Mayor.

My wife and I have lived at our residence since 2003 and we are finally at a point to do a significant remodel. With the SMP proposed, this remodel project will force us to do the remodel in two stages frankly producing a less desirable outcome. Most recently, construction authorized by the city above our residence has caused flooding in our daylight basement forcing the removal of all carpeting and drywall. Further, my neighbor experienced continual flooding for over a week until Public Works spent a couple days removing debris from the storm drains running along Holmes Point above our homes. Miraculously, as soon as the drains were unplugged, the flooding has stopped. We are now uncomfortable doing a substantial remodel knowing this flooding issue can occur again without a new foundation.(Original foundation from 1932) With a new foundation, it will trigger the ordinance to remove our boathouse among other triggers causing additional costs while not changing any aspects of the current footprint. We would like relief from this ordinance since Kirkland is responsible for the recent flooding in our home. It makes little sense to spend nearly a million dollars on a remodel knowing our foundation is suspect. But, what is odd, the ordinance Kirkland has in place is driving us to do just this. We are homeowners on Lake Washington. As proposed, the master plan update unfairly places harsh restrictions and economic impacts on homeowners for minor, if any, clear public benefit.
