We need to get someone that has EXTENSIVE knowledge about SC, but they also need to have interest in radical treatment. Too many people are suffering and the solutions are too cookie cutter.

I firmly believe the current head of the Sickle Cell Clinic who makes the decisions regarding the infusion center needs someone who will be a strong supporter and advocate for all patients. I left partly due to difficulties with the Head of the Sickle Cell clinic. I often felt treated unfairly and made to make excessive concessions to receive appropriate treatment which was never a problem before Dr. DrCastro left.

Duke University Medical Center has long been an international leader in sickle cell disease research and patient care. It is incomprehensible that the position of Clinical Director of Adult Hematology Services has been vacant since Dr. DeCastro left in 2013. The sickle cell provider community has made great strides in the care of pediatric patients and it is imperative that we continue this legacy by devoting the same level of commitment to the care of adults living with sickle cell disease. On behalf of SCDAA-Eastern NC Chapter, I would strongly encourage this position to be filled as soon as possible so that we can take the fight against sickle cell disease to the next level.

Sickle Cell is such a complicated disease that patients deserve to have a hematologist that has the knowledge, understanding and background in sickle cell research and experience.
