Dear President Boutilier and International Board of Directors of Sweet Adelines International,

Per a video and accompanying script sent to members via email on January 25, 2022, Sweet Adelines International announced that “all attendees and competitors will be required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. For those with documented medical and religious exemptions, a negative PCR test within 72 hours of the event will be available as an option.”

The Sweet Adelines International members and supporters (event attendees) signed below respectfully request you rescind the requirement for “full vaccination or documented medical and religious exemption” to attend events. We request, if you must require any restrictions at all, that you require proof of negative test within 72 hours of arrival for all attendees. While proof of negative test is only a single point in time, it provides equity for all, whether you believe in reduced transmission due to vaccine or natural immunity, both of which have been acknowledged by the CDC. If liability is your concern, you could use your liability waiver statement included in the PDF registration form for regional competitors.

We do not wish to debate the efficacy of vaccination but intend to protect the rights of all members for medical privacy within this volunteer organization. A person’s vaccination status and/or reasons for such status are inherently private and, as such, should not be a requirement for participation in any Sweet Adelines event or activity. Proof of negative test is currently the only CDC approved method for determining an individual's transmissibility at a given point in time.

Respect ALL human rights and medical privacy; rescind the vaccination or exemption mandate. It is the right & fair thing to do.

Signed,

Your Members & Supporters

As a 37 year member and a regional leader, I am so very disappointed in Sweet Adelines International after hearing this decision. We have already lost membership in recent years and this will continue that trend, sowing even more division than is already present. I pray you will recognize the rights of our members in their medical decisions and rescind this unnecessary requirement. It is a very personal decision and is nobody's business other than the member. Trust our members.

As a chorus member, quartet member, team leader, & and even a vaccinated member, I’m disappointed that SAI, a “volunteer” organization, has put so many mandates on its members that it has taken the joy out of doing what we love. SINGING! THIS mandate goes far and above the others and infringes on members rights to choose what they feel is best for their health. When does it stop?

It doesn't make sense to require proof of vaccine, if vaccinated people can still spread the virus. I am fully vaccinate and refuse to go any where that requires proof. We are adults in an adult organization. If people do not feel safe, they should not attend.

I’ve been in this organization almost 50 years. Because of SAI I have a great career, husband and friends all over the world. I can’t believe a volunteer organization I pay yo belong to would limit participation in our international contest. We are all adults and should be able to make our own decisions on our medical behalf. I am saddened this decision was made. There ARE other routes we can take. Please reconsider and make a decision which slows us to do what we love- SING!!

The vaccine minimizes the severity of symptoms for the vaccinated person if covid is contracted. It's not immunity against the disease and it doesn't prevent spread. I feel the best safety barometer for all attending international is testing prior to contest.

It's one thing to tell us how to dress, who to include, and what music we can and can't sing. But I draw the line at telling me what medications I have to take.
