Respect4Raleigh 2008

We, the undersigned, are concerned that current building trends may cause irreparable harm to the history, character, livability, and diversity of Raleigh\'s older neighborhoods. We wish to raise the public profile of this issue and request that the City enact protections by establishing minimum infill standards for residential redevelopment of any neighborhood over 40 years old. In addition we request the immediate establishment of an Infill Development Study/Task Group that will work with the Planning Department to study and implement best practices from other cities to guide redevelopment activities in established neighborhoods. We believe that revitalization of neighborhoods is best accomplished through the investment of residents into building and renovating private homes, and we stand against the practice of unregulated redevelopment of existing neighborhoods by commercial interests. We ask that the City take a firm stand on protecting our older neighborhoods from teardown activities that promote the building of excessively large incompatible structures which damage the fabric of our communities. We believe this can be accomplished in a way that preserves rights for ALL citizens.
