Living in Australia I just discovered this genius by accident, since then I can’t get enough of his unique and very authentic style and sound. With current bands and solo artists like The Black Keys, Jack White, Cage The Elephant, The Black Angles and even the latest arrival being Royal Blood you can only imagine that Rory would site high and tall above these artists in a grandfather figure of Blues and Rock N Roll. I can only think of what might have been if this man were to have ever collaborated with any of the aforementioned artists! If he were to come from America or the UK such as the Muddy Water, B.B. King or The Rolling Stones there is no doubt that he would have been marketed and commercialised to the hilt and for sure the rest of the world would know of him for sure. When it comes to producing world class writers, poets and musicians a small nation such as Ireland as has repeatedly punched well above it weight and to the jealousy of other countries. Ireland has always been revered for remembering and celebrating those who have contributed to their society, such as those involved in the 1916 rising, writers and poets such as Oscar Wild, W.B. Yates and James Joyce have had their works celebrated and remembered. Patrick Kavanagh has a centre in Cavan, musician Phil Lynott has a statue on Dublin’s Grafton St., yet form my research Rory Gallagher is not mentioned, remembered or celebrated in the same vein as the above, which to me is a crying shame. New Orleans, USA is named after Louis Armstrong Parma, Italy is named after Giuseppe Verdi Salzburg, Austria is named after Wolfgang Mozart All of the above mentioned musicians from their respective parts of the world have been distinguished with a public commemoration surely Rory Gallagher and his music deserves this honour. Given Rory's dislike of flying that he overcame to continuously tour internationally, I think he would get a kick out of naming the airport after him.
