Niagara University has sworn to adhere to a commitment of supporting its Black and Brown students as well as the larger BLM movement as a whole. Though while maintaining the Police Academy it refuses to acknowledge the trauma and fear that Students on campus must face everyday. This is a massive oversight if Niagara truly seeks to create a racially safe campus, mental health is something that is consistently ignored especially as it pertains to the experiences of minorities. Through this petition and the work of fellow student we will finally create a safe campus for all students.

The Academy provides no benefit to the School; It provides Zero revenue for the University.
It takes up physical space for people that do not even pay to attend here and could be used for other things such as a student union or classrooms.
It puts the burden on the students to engage with and share space with cadets, as if our campus is their playground or experiment zone and not a University.
According the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Universities should do everything they can to divest from Policing, https://www.aclu.org/news/criminal-law-reform/poli... because it promotes an unsafe and toxic campus for students.
We recommend it being moved to the now refurbished building owned by Niagara in Downtown Niagara Falls.
We ask that all students, Alumni and family and friends of students sign on to this petition, because this is an issue of safety for students mental health and physical well being!

We have reached the two hundred fifty signature benchmark. This volume of support allows me to formally request a meeting with the university administration to review our proposal for repurposing the academy space.

As an NU Alumni, I was taught in the Vincentian tradition to help those in need including those who break the law. However, for the hierarchy of NU to shoulder Law Enforcement Officers who protect us in an irrational act which flies in the face of the teachings of Aquinas. One can only hope Fr. Maher can see his errors early on and recant his decision.
As a white woman I don’t even like them here I can’t imagine being a person of color
A critical precedent for colleges and universities across the country. An institution is a place of learning not militarization and intimidation. Power to the people ✊
You cannot fully commit to the Black Lives Matter movement *and* still have a police academy at your institution. If your students are telling you to remove the police academy and they do not feel safe LISTEN to them.
Keeping the Cadet program on campus serves no purpose toward the university’s responsibility in collaborating with and listening to the Black students, faculty, staff and community members at NU. Transitioning the program off campus, while using the opportunity to examine the ways white supremacy and militarization of police departments are perpetrated within the training and police education system itself, seems to be the most logical and proactive step forward without much or any risk to the communities involved.
Alumnus who wants to see the university become as diverse, tolerant and successful as it can be!
If you want to remove the police from your campus you should also eliminate the criminal justice degree program as well as the ROTC program. As a proud family member of alumnus that graduated from both programs I am utterly embarrassed for this University that these types of comments are being made about fellow students. I will no longer financially support NU if these are the values that are being taught and or allowed at a supposed Vincentian University. I will also be sure to share this embarrassing display with my ROTC grad nephew who is now serving as an Army attorney.

Im a senior architecture student at UB. I believe in Abolition of the police state, not reform. This is a step in the right direction to make students feel safe. I hope you hear our voices all over Buffalo.
