Referendum to Review the 1914 Amalgamation of Northern and Southern Nigeria
In 1914, the British signed the Amalgamation of the Northern and Southern protectorate to become one protectorate, called Nigeria. The agreement signed to law was subject to a review after 100 years. It is 106years now since the merger was signed to law and is therefore over-due for a Review by Nigerians. It is clear that the amalgamation of 1914 has not achieved its purpose of progress and prosperity in Nigeria. The country has become inhabitable as the government has basically turned against its people, by haunting down dissenting voices and shooting protesters yearning and calling for better governance and accountability. An instance is the massive shooting of Nigerian citizens during the #EndSars protest at Lekki Tollgate, in Lagos.
The country is plagued with Nepotism, Injustice, corruption and bad governance since Independence in 1960, which led to a major civil war in 1967. Since attainment of independence in 1960 and after the civil war of 1967-1970, Agitation and cry for Oduduwa Nation(South-West Region), Biafra Nation(South East Region) and the Arewa Nation(North Western/Eastern Hausa/Fulani region) has increased. Other regions crying for independence include the Niger Delta Nation(South-south region) and the predominantly Christian community in the North Central region. This pro-separatist sentiment has garnered the support of Nigerians across the country owing to incessant killings by the notorious Bokoharam terrorist group ravaging the Northeast and some part of the North West. Kidnapping and banditry is tearing down the six geo-political zones, perpetrated by hoodlums and bandits disguised as herdsmen, mainly from the Fulani speaking parts of the country. They kidnap, rape, extort and sometimes kill their victims. Worst of all is the government un-willingness to clamp down any of these criminals and terrorists group, instead launch a direct attack on every Anti-Fulani sentiments.
Finally, in order to prevent another major civil and ethnic war, we are calling for the Review of the 1914 Amalgamation of the Northern and Southern protectorate in Nigeria on a date to be determined before the next presidential election in Nigeria, through a Referendum that will be conducted and observed by representatives of at least one Nation from the continents of the World, as we can not trust the Nigeria government to conduct an independent, free and fair Referendum.
