Oppose the Renaming of James F. Byrnes High School Mascot, the "Rebels"

This is not a racial sign, but if this passes You will start another racial battle. This name has history just as Martin Luther king day and black history month. If rebel is such a problem then all these days need to be eliminated from school. If you want to teach history make sure it is taught correctly. The black community sold their own race to slavery, but we are not taught that, Why?? I did not have an issue with these things until now. The ignorance and asking us to put ourselves in their shoes. How about put yourself in our shoes. Why is their not a white history month? Why does the Caucasian community not have a college fund just for them like the United Negro College Fund? But yet the think it's racist to call them negros. They don't mind that scolorship though. My question is who is racist?

C/O 2003 and proud Byrnes Rebel. This is just going too far. Changing the name will do nothing to unite us, but make us feel more divided and that is not what we were taught at Byrnes. We were one, regardless of race, gender, or class. Many of us have been friends since elementary school and still are. Byrnes Rebels is not the problem here in a country that claims to want us to be more united and then does everything to ensure we still feel divided and different. We are all brothers and sisters. Byrnes provided a safe and reputable place to grow together. We are proud to be Rebels and all we have come to accomplish regardless. Shame on you for trying to find the ugly in something that has been a beautiful part of us all.

I'm a proud alumnus of Boiling Springs High, but I strongly oppose the pluralistic society we as a nation are headed towards. Pluralism doesn't work. When you try to accommodate for every worldview, and try your hardest not to offend people, you usually fail miserably. You will still offend. Why? Because anything anyone says, sees, does, or looks at can be deemed offensive. You can not please everyone. And school mascots have to be just about the most petty thing to be offended by. If we wanted to change every school mascot that might be offensive, we'd have to pretty much change them all. That's unrealistic. We need to stop worrying about offending people. Because if you stand for nothing, you fall for anything.
