We are a concerned group of citizens, taxpayers and friends of Essex who are opposed to the proposed 22-acre solar field across the street from the Fire Department and contiguous to the hamlet of Essex. We think it is neither appropriate nor compatible with the area in which it is to be located. We urge you not to permit the construction of a solar farm on this site.

  • Essex currently has a committee developing a long-range plan. While the final land-use designations are not yet determined, it is reasonable to expect that areas adjacent to the hamlet will be designated for residential and small business use. Moving forward with a large-scale industrial commercial project that may be “grandfathered” into a new zoning plan before it is even built is not a prudent decision.
  • The APA has designated this land as a “Resource Management” area that underscores the critical need to protect, manage, and enhance forest, agricultural, recreational, and open space resources due to significant natural and public considerations. As the most restrictive private land classification within the park, it prioritizes conservation and strictly limits development to maintain the area's natural and open-space character. It is hard to rationalize a 22-acre commercial/industrial venture as a limited development at this site.
  • Essex risks being burdened by a development that will only grow more unpopular over time. Economic pressures may well lead to the division and sale of this valuable land, limiting future opportunities. With no alternative space for growth, placing a solar farm here would likely cut off a practical, desirable and attractive path for the town’s expansion.
  • This solar field exists for the singular profit of the solar company (CPG). The energy produced will feed into the larger grid. It will not directly power any homes in Essex. In the grand scheme, it will supply less than ½ of 0.5% of New York State’s energy needs—a negligible contribution compared to the ill-will and disruption it will generate.
  • We live in and visit Essex for its timeless beauty, recreational opportunities, and the chance to escape into nature. Essex embodies the treasured, nostalgic essence of the Adirondack Park as it was first conceived with the tag line of "Forever Wild." A 22-commercial/industrial acre solar installation at this site would fundamentally alter the identity and character of Essex, threatening the charm, pride, and deep sense of place that residents and visitors cherish. Such a development would diminish the village’s architectural and historical integrity, impact real estate values, and jeopardize the tourism upon which Essex relies. A solar farm poses a lasting and existential threat to the character of this historic village, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Please consider what you are saying about the ADKs and about us if you allow the construction of this solar farm. We are opposed because It is INCOMPATIBLE with the area. It is NOT THE PLACE for it.

Just because you can, does not mean you should.
