Recently in my home state of New Mexico, the University of New Mexico's basketball arena known for decades as "The Pit" had its name purchased. It has been THE staple of local sports, and has even hosted the NCAA's Final Four. They intend to name it "Wisepies Arena", okay fine and good it's their money. Over the years sporting arenas have whored themselves out, removing names like Jack Murphy and RFK, and the ONE instance that made more sense than any other was usurped by the biggest for-profit college in the world.
I don't need to detail just who Pat Tillman was, or what he did. I am certain enough people are familiar with his sacrifice as well as what he meant to the Arizona Cardinals organization.
I have no doubt this will get blasted by internet trolls citing the irony of my shot at commercialization by attempting to assist a highly commercialized industry, those who do so are missing the point.
I would like to just attempt to display as many names as possible who would rather see the "University of Phoenix Stadium" renamed "Pat Tillman Stadium" or "Pat Tillman Memorial Colosseum" or something of the like. It would be one hell of a gesture in the right direction for a change.
This is one of NFL's ORIGINAL 6 teams. I have been a fan since they came to the southwest, and that includes the horrific years when we were the laughing stock of all of professional sports, and when we shared the field with ASU and it was upward of 140 degrees on the sidelines. I'm sure there are plenty of others who agree, and I would just like to see how much momentum this gets.
