N DEFENCE OF DĄBROWSZCZACY STREET- AGAINST HISTORICAL REVISIONISM
In 2007 Polish authorities decided to take away veteran benefits from soldiers of the XIII Jarosław Dąbrowski International Brigade, heroes of the Spanish Civil War, who fought on republican side against emerging fascism. It is then that group consisting of few hundred intellectuals from all over the world and also children of Dąbrowszczacy made a public appeal to politicians asking them to “leave the dead in peace”.
In June we found out about outrageous plans to change name of the Dąbrowszczacy street in Warsaw. It is yet another attempt to attack memory of Polish heroes of the Spanish Civil War. In the name of “decommunisation” they try to remove all those that in 1936 were first to resist military attempts of fascist ideology. This struggle, so far away from their motherland, soldiers of Jarosław Dąbrowski Brigade joined of their own free will and with clear intentions. Not because enemy was at the border of Poland, not because their homes were in danger and not in the name of “national duty”. Only duty that called them was an awareness of what iwas the struggle in Spain about- what was going to happen if the fascist war machine will not be stopped on time. When nearly entire Europe turned face away from the “Spanish case”, volunteers from International Brigades risked and sacrificed their lives.
We don't agree to erase from memory those, that served Europe as heroes against most cruel totalitarianism. “Clearing” of the city space from monuments and names of streets not being part of the official, national version of the history is only a thin line away from burning of the “wrong” books. Perhaps it is time to read Orwell again, who was a hero of the Spanish Civil War himself?

Dr Shaw is quite correct in his assertion that History should not be re-written or "twisted" to accommodate current political thinking.
