Scratch paper is a necessity during the exam. As creative problem solvers, architects sketch ideas out. It’s ridiculous you would take that away from us.

The exam is hard enough as it is, we should at least be given the right, as potential future registered architects, to take notes and do calculations on pencil and paper. It is so basic - I don’t think that is much to ask. NCARB should be looking out for us, assisting and facilitating this stressful and time consuming test process as much as possible instead of making it more difficult and awkward.

Yea, taking away scratch paper for in-person exams is absolute BS and is nothing more than a grab for money from failed exams.

I 100% agree with this. The math alone requires hand written insane notes. I fill the book every time. I have Taken and passed 2 Exams in a row and This year has already paused my momentum. Has anyone ever looked at their scrap paper after. It’s a jumbled mess. I try to at least number my scratches so if I need to go back to a question during but my mess would make no sense to anyone. It’s for me to figure out the problem or write an integral note for something in a case study quickly. And you need to write every fast. If you didn’t study for these exams you can pass period! Any one signing up and paying for these tests is aiming to pass. There is no way jotting down a few questions for someone on scratch paper is useful to cheating and passing. As a passer of these tests I can tell you there is not enough time in each question to cheat and everyone gets a different varying set of questions. This is so stupid.

Paper is essential to help us think through these very challenging problems . Paper and pencil are the very essential elements of our profession and scratch paper during the exam may be the only feature left connecting the ARE to our practice..

Scratch paper will be vital to most people’s success. Switching to the digital whiteboard will only cause even more computer problems I imagine and lead to more frustrations and even higher fail rates. They never want us to become licenses.

I understand why they are doing this because they can not allow scratch paper during remote testing. However, I dont think they should take the paper away during in person testing. Especially we are trying to be architects. We draw. We write. We calculate on paper. That's what we do to solve problems!

The scratch paper is suitable for both remote proctoring and at test centers. The CPBD Certification exam for building designers, which is an online proctored exam, also allows for blank paper for use as sketches, notes, calculating. The online proctoring inspects the blank paper during check-in procedure and also in the check-out to make sure the scrap paper used does not contain confidential exam information. I see no reason for not having the scrap paper for the ARE. Therefore, I do support this.
I support NCARB's move towards for online proctoring but I do support the notion for scrap paper to be allowed. It's just a check-in and check-out procedure. If NCARB and proctors want, require us to have a paper shredder to shred the scrap paper used in front of the proctors. If someone is that hell bent on disclosing confidential exam content, they can do so without the note paper. However, if they ever brag about it and NCARB finds out, they can effectively invalidate their license, their exam scores, and be barred from ever getting licensed or authorized to test ever again in their natural lives. They will literally die before being allowed to take the exam again or any future future. If you value what you are doing and your goal at licensure, you shouldn't cheat. Plain and simple.
I think NCARB should reconsider that issue. It would also give NCARB time to make sure the virtual "whiteboard" system really works well and to fix it over time through soft-patching of the exam software. Therefore, the exam client should have an update mechanism just like any online game that uses a server-client model where the client and content of the game is updated. The difference here is the exam software client and you can do likewise with the server system.
The client would need to check for updates upon launch and the person should do this plenty of time in advance of their scheduled exam time for the updates to take place and any restart sequence required. Do

NCARB owes architects and candidates far more transparency about these changes than they’ve displayed so far. Test takers are their biggest revenue stream, and therefore stakeholders.

The use of pen and paper is impresindible, it improves the way of thinking and helps desucing stress. A digital option it is just going to increase stress and waste valuable time during the test.
