NCARB leadership is out of touch. They make these move under the illusion that proves equality. They refused to offer a modern CAD tool for prior tests. All prior architects had the ability to use scratch paper and pencils. Now it is an issue. If this is such a problem how about having those who test virtual have to either have a shredder or rip the paper up so the proctor to see it destroyed.

Please allow architects to use scratch paper and consider having them mail you their scraps or destroy them post test near the camera. It’s crucial for thinking

The only thing that can replace pen and paper is something of quality as the apple pencil. Anything less than that is useless.

This is ridiculous! If the solution does not involve state of the art ipads per person with a digital pen it's a stupid idea. Why don't you get the current program working before you launch a new one!??

The scratch paper is critical to completing the questions that require calculations or layouts for site plans. In school and in practice we use paper to sketch out ideas. You cannot take that tool away from us.

I have no idea how I will be able to do calculation questions without a scratch paper! Using the screen would slow me down considerably! Not to mention that we need papers to jot down our thinking process (notes, sketches and diagrams) during the exam and help us answer the questions (and review them if necessary). Why make things even more difficult for test takers?! There are so many other issues with the exams that should be a priority to NCARB: fixing the bugs being number one... I strongly disagree with this crazy (and kind of cruel) idea!

Scratch paper was an invaluable resource during my exams. Im not anti-technology and I am open to changes including technology advancements, but right now I can't see a practical digital replacement to physical scratch paper.

I read an article about this and a lot of disciplines believe the presence of scratch paper weakens the integrity of the test. If this is the case with NCARB, then this shows a lack of trust in aspiring architects. I can't help but to think that this is tactic to make the test taking experience a little bit harder. It may sound extreme but some people work better with physical scratch paper than digital.

Taking the paper awayonly henders our test taking. We are a profession that thrives from the pencil on paper! we do everything faster with an actual pencil on paper, not typing something on a screen!

The exam is already time sensitive and we write - DRAW faster by hand. This is an opportunity to make more mistakes.
Unless NCARB will provide touch screen monitors this will be of some help or extend the time of the exam.

If scratch paper is somehow seen as a liability for NCARB, then NCARB can surely manage this problem at the testing centers rather than punishing the test takers. We're already under enough stress with this process with covid on top of it all. You can never replicate the frantic speed, scribbling, darkening of letters, crossing things out, fast math, diagrams, lines connecting thoughts etc on a computer screen.

We draw to think. As a licensed Architect and chair of my local AIA Emerging Professionals Committee, I do my best to help promote the importance of licensure and advise our emerging architects on the process. I strongly disagree with the switch to a digital scratch paper system, and the hasty implementation of changes to the testing process without consulting the AEC professionals and adequate time for review and transition. We should be challenged by content, not the complicated, unweildy, and discriminatory format of the ARE exams.
