Every minor leaguer should earn $50,000 a year. This is a multi billion dollar industry and paying your minor leaguers enough to live on for 12 months will allow them to focus solely on baseball for the entire 12 months and become much better baseball players.

I am related to Raul Jacobson, whose father is my nephew. I have been interested in minor league baseball since I listened to Leo Lassen in the early 1940's who broadcast the Seattle Rainiers.

Played 6 seasons of minor league baseball from 2005-2010. I had a degree in Economics from UC Davis and earned $3300 total in my first 3 months of professional baseball. After taxes and clubhouse dues, we were left with a little over $100 per week. My first team provided connections to host families, but my second team did not, and I walked down the street knocking on doors until I found a host after the team was unable to connect me with anyone in the community. Despite the claim that minor leaguers are seasonal employees, they really aren’t. Any player who only devotes their playing season to improving their skill will not last more than a single season. Players are sent “recommended” workout and nutrition plans in the offseason and need to continue to throw, hit, and condition to be competitive. There is no salary compensation during the off-season for the 3 hours per day of this training, nor the month of spring training. A $15k base salary would be a step in the right direction.

Minor league baseball has been a great source of joy for me since I attended Prince William Cannons (now Fredericksburg Nationals) games as a young kid. These games not only instilled a lifelong passion for baseball in me, but provide entertainment for countless families and bring economic benefits to the communities teams reside in. It's time minor league players are paid a living wage.

Minor leagues worked hard to get to where they are. They are in the top percentile in their industry. Think of any other job. If you’re one of the best at your job, a company is going to pay top dollar to retain you. This should be no different.
