In 1982, Exxon scientists wrote a "primer" on carbon emissions and climate change stating that preventing dangerous global warming "would require major reductions in fossil fuel combustion", and that unless we did so, "there are some potentially catastrophic events that must be considered...Once the effects are measurable, they might not be reversible." NASA has written:" Humans have increased atmospheric CO2 concentration...This is the most important cause of climate change." Global warming is real and threatens the future of those we love-our children and their children and their children. Denying reality and it's consequences won't stop them from happening. The Paris Agreement is only the first, but important, step. Michael Bloomberg recently said: "Americans will honor and fulfill the Paris Agreement by leading from the bottom up-and there isn't anything Washington can do to stop us". He means you and me, acting out of our commitment and love to those who follow after us, wherever they may call home.

Why would we choose to live our lives in a way that would harm our children's future? Of course you should sign!

Hey Jim. That's a softball, surely, coming from you. The agreement fundamentally just requires that countries have a plan, and that they report on it. Per http://www.pressherald.com/2017/05/31/climate-change-the-paris-agreement-and-the-u-s-the-facts/ the US submission called for a reduction by 2025 of 26 to 28 percent below 2005 levels. Tightening up your home with energy effiiciency measures such as EnergizeNY helps us with can save 30% of your home heating/cooling energy. Go Solar (the Solarize Lewisboro campaign ends tomorrow, but the momentum continues!). Switching to an electric car can make a dent in the approximately 40% of our footprint that is transportation as we green the grid through programs such as Westchester Power. There are any number of tip lists out there that offer ways to pitch in at home, e.g. http://www.ase.org/resources/top-10-home-energy-efficiency-tips. And you can multiply your impact by participating in local organizations and initiatives that are working towards these goals.

We must take responsibility locally and individually. Future generations would want us to do everything possible to ensure what is needed to sustain life - clean water, soil, food, and air.

The Town supported the solarize program, so this is a logical continuation and extension of steps already taken.

Are there things we can do to meet individual goals for complying with the standards of the Paris accord?

Yes, we should do this. It is our moral responsibility to our country and the rest of the world.

I know Lewisboro will sign on because the Town Board is deeply invested in the future of our children, our planet and this beautiful corner of Northern Westchester we call home.
