Due to the following physical characteristics of Dolores Street, operation of large vehicles on this street poses unsafe conditions to passenger vehicles and pedestrians:

  • Steep road grades which contribute to increased stopping time and distance for large vehicles
  • Narrow lanes which reduce clearance between commercial and passenger vehicles
  • Large number of pedestrian crossings that are not protected by stop signs or traffic lights thus posing risk to pedestrians crossing Dolores Street

Based on these unsafe conditions, the undersigned residents of San Francisco petition that the SFMTA (working with the Board of Supervisors and the Mayor’s office as needed) take the following actions:

1. Initiate the process to impose a 3 ton vehicle weight restriction on certain portions of Dolores Street

2. Based on the above 3 ton weight restriction, work with Caltrans to remove the designation of Dolores Street as an Arterial Street (that is, neither Major or Minor) for its entire length from its intersection with San Jose Ave. to Market St.

3. Advise owners and operators of Commuter Bus Shuttles that since the SFMTA is considering imposing a vehicle weight restriction on Dolores St., shuttle buses are not allowed to operate on this street until this issue is resolved.

4. Reject the proposed plan to establish no-parking zones on Dolores Street for Commuter Shuttle buses as this affects an already challenging parking situation
