Support a Surf School Permit for Hawai‘i Surf Association to Serve Kaua‘i’s Youth and Community
The Hawai‘i Surf Association (HSA), a 501c3 nonprofit in the region of Kaua‘i, is respectfully requesting community support for the issuance of a surf school permit in Hanalei, outside the current limited allocations.
For decades, the Hawai‘i Surf Association (HSA) has created opportunities for youth and families on Kaua‘i through the Kaua‘i Grom Series, a long-standing youth surf league previously known as HSA/HSF/HASA. Building on this foundation, HSA has recently expanded its reach through the statewide Hawai‘i Boardriders Clubs and, most significantly, by providing the competition platform for the new Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation (KIF) Surf League. This league officially recognizes surfing as an interscholastic sport and extends opportunities to every high school athlete across Kaua‘i’s public, private, and charter schools, reaching an estimated 8 to 10 schools island-wide. By offering this competitive structure, HSA ensures that surfing is accessible not just to individual families but to the broader student body, making it a unifying activity across diverse educational settings.
To sustain and grow these initiatives, HSA is seeking to establish a reliable source of internal revenue that will allow us to continue supporting our programs. Beyond competition, HSA remains deeply committed to ocean safety education, environmental stewardship, and preserving the cultural significance of surfing in Hawai‘i.
Granting HSA a permit would provide a much-needed source of internal revenue that directly supports these programs, ensuring they remain accessible to our keiki, families, and broader community.
By signing this petition, you are voicing support for HSA’s request to DOBAR, DLNR, and the County of Kaua‘i to consider granting Hawai‘i Surf Association a permit in recognition of its proven service to the island and its people.
