Help make gym classes at Highland Middle School equal for boys and girls

While I personally Did Not Attend Highland I know many people that did as I live in Libertyville and Run a Company Based in Libertyville and I am Personally ashamed to know that anything like this is going on in a Village Like Ours and am VERY Disappointed in the Administration of District 70 that they would allow anything like this to happen. But on The other side I am happy to say that I along with my Family Which have went to Highland will stand behind you and help Make what you want including this and any other things at highland a reality as to make this community as good as it can be.

Although girls and boys do habe some differenced, dosen't mesn that it is right to treat girls (or boys) in this kind of way. I truly hope that this may one day change

So proud of my granddaughter and daughter (and others signing this petition) for continuing to fight for equality in sports and fitness. Changes in the administration need to be made to have better leadership and role models for students and the community.

This is 2016!! I am sad that this even has to be a petition, but am inspired by these girls for demanding change!

I really agree with this. Girls should be treated exactly the way boys should, and being treated differently from boys shouldn't be happening at Highland.

We would like to keep the constructive dialogue open. Please remember that this petition was written by 6th graders with specific concerns, attempts to address those concerns, and a wish for a positive outcome. Several parents (that we are aware of) contacted the superintendent directly with concerns as well. We suggest anyone with past or present concerns outside the realm of this petition work with the school and district to address them. Maybe these girls can inspire others to work for positive change!

Reading this and the comments infuriates me. As a former Highland parent, I had these same frustrations with the administration but with other issues. It sounds like they may be taking some steps in the right direction but I'm guessing only after pressure from the district. I don't know who wrote this but be careful- Highland will do as little as possible until you get tired of fighting. Hopefully you can really get them to change and that the district will finally admit that Highland has some serious issues.

We are beginning to see change! The administration sent an email to all parents stating that "the PE department is working to effectively address all of the concerns addressed by students". Yesterday the girls used the "South Gym" (the larger space) while the boys used the multi-purpose room for floor hockey. It's a small step but makes us hopeful that larger changes are on the horizon. Let's keep the conversation going and keep encouraging schools to teach boys and girls equally!

You have every right to your opinion. It does sound like Highland has room to improve equal opportunities for girls in many areas. Perhaps this is just a small first step in that direction.

I do admit though I did over react but this is petition is an over reaction

I think that this petition is very exaggerated. I am now in 7th grade and choose to be anonymous but this is just wrong. I am a girl too. But, have you ever cried over not being able to carry a bag of soccer balls out to the field or done 15 extra push ups? if you have...... I am not trying to hurt any ones feelings but it is exaggerated and how would you like to spend the whole period and or unit of soccer standing there because the only time the boys pass to you it when they feel sorry for you. I think that if you want to focus on equality then focus on the SOCCER TEAMS! only 2 girls per grade get on the teams! And I feel that if there was a girls team that there would be more girls trying out. OH! and also if your a girl and you want to try out for soccer and volley ball you can't because its on the same days! And then you don't make the soccer team. So why do you care about PE when there's actual sports! And aren't all of you 6th grade girls just looking for attention! I have gone through 6th grade and yes it happens sometimes but focus on actual sports not PE! I doubt that you 6th graders cried over not doing push ups or carrying things outside. And also probably to lazy (and I am not saying just 6th grade but all grade) and yes it can be hurtful but its one thing... and you guys repeated yourselves a lot. #notSigngin

Graduated from HMS in 1989, not much has changed it seems. Very troubling.

I'm signing this cause I'm a girl who beat the boys in most sports. I guess you're afraid they might too.
