How could anyone possibly have been so blind to the design differences as to make such a stupendous blunder, or so arrogant as to think they could get it past members without a vote? Not only do Optis have multiple safety issues for younger kids that the Sea Shells don’t, they actually cost _more_ to purchase and maintain, plus they’re far more fragile and won’t stand up to more than a couple of seasons of dragging up and down the beach before they’re ruined! Or are they planning to install a storage facility and floating docks like other Opti programs have to prevent them from getting damaged? Not to mention cutting all the centerboards in half so they can even get around the Lagoon! Where will they store all the masts, booms and sprits, and who’s going to make sure nobody gets knocked out with them waving all around the beach? This has got to be one of the most momentous changes made since the inception of the club, with much further-reaching consequences than if they had suddenly decided to phase out the A-boats, and yet they tell us about it in an email just before Christmas? Didn’t the entire membership just vote a while ago about extending junior tennis another ½ hour, and now they try and sneak this past us in secret meetings when nobody’s around to stand up to them? Just last fall they were encouraging us all to buy new Sea Shells, and now this? What happens when the Sea Shells are gone and they find out that they can’t even use the Optis for classes C and D? What happens when they find out that the older kids don't even _want_ to sail Optis with all the modern training boats now available? If this isn't a joke, there certainly _will_ be a vote, but it will be about replacing board members, not about replacing boats!

I can't imagine GLP without the seashell fleet. An iconic part of this wonderful community. Also Optis are not fit for the small lagoon. The wind is too shifty in there and Optis are much more sensitive to wind than seashells. Also Opti dagger boards are much longer and won't work in those shallow waters.

I have been sailing my entire life and will always remember learning how to sail in these boats. Unless they are in horrible condition, and cannot be maintained any longer they are a unique sailing experience that is the face of GLPYC.

Many of my family members, 4 generations now, have sailed these Sea Shells and they are a unique and special part of GLP. I understand both sides of the debate, but it should ultimately be discussed and voted on by the entire community.

I was active in the Seashell program with my two sisters while growing up we still have her seashell in the garage both of my children sailed in the Seashell program. I would like their children to also sail in the seashell program passing our seashell down again to the next generation. I would somebody want to change this program when there are so many seashells in peoples basements ready to sail each year the expense of having to buy OPTi's doesn't make sense

Sea Shells are a GLPYC institution that we all shared, and hope to continue to pass along. Whether or not they remain as Sea Shells or Optis, this is something that should be voted on by the people it effects. But hopefully we can keep our classic Sea Shell fleet alive for more generations to come.

Such a unique part of what makes GLP the great place it is. I'd like to see seashells stick around for the younger generations still to come. Some things are better upgraded, and others should be left unchanged.

I'm not against upgrading the fleet because I believe it will make GLPYC more competitive in junior sailing but the lagoon is made for Sea Shells and kids that only spend 2-4 weeks a year sailing. If you want to sail Optis then you can have two fleets on the lagoon. Just like Blue Jays and 420s in Jr sailing

It's really hard for me to support a yacht club that I have loved growing up when they make ridiculous decisions like this. We are not a competitive sailing program, and although there are some (rather few) that want us to be, they need to understand that seashells is fun, and that kids do it to learn the basics of sailing and to be with friends/other glp kids. I think this is a rash decision and I don't think much thought was put into this, which is sad but I guess speaks to the people in charge at our yacht club.
