Children are our future. How can government give money for 'eat out to help out' and not support families in need

As a single parent of 3 small children when my husband walked out on us in the 90s, 00s I was in and out of work and struggling to get a degree and post graduate in teaching. During holidays I had to get support from welfare when I was working in an agency and no work available or between uni years, or working 15 hrs per week. Many times I fed my children on rice and beans as it was nutritious . I didn’t smoke or drink I just didn’t have enough for rent and food together. My children needed a roof over their heads. I know how it feels to be in despair. I would not wish what I went through on anyone. I lived in hell. Now I’m disabled and living in a different hell but at least it’s only me. One time my 9 yr old son was ill. I took him to the doctor for some calpol for his temperature. I didn’t have any money left in my purse. The locum said “ I know people like you have money. I’m not giving you a prescription” I cried and walked my sick son all the way home. I was heartbroken. I wouldn’t put what my beloved children went through for anything. All are now in work, one is a police officer, one is in Berlin directing a film, one has never been out of work since leaving school and is now 35. A little help feeding them would have stopped so many tears.

Free meal (vouchers) are a much more immediate way of ensuring that food gets to a hungry child, rather than the ponderous vehicle of Universal Credit. Any food parcels must contain only healthy foods - no crisps, chocolate etc. Proper food for brain and body!
