Ballina Road (R494) Repair & Resurfacing
The Ballina Road is falling apart!
Our road is a major interchange off the busy M7 motorway
It has thousands of motor users and cyclists daily
It is the access to one of Ireland's most popular tourist amenities and destination heritage centres. (This point is understood on the Clare side of the river where the access roads are first class yet the daily traffic is a fraction of the R494)
Pot holes, flood points, broken surfaces and subsidence are at dangerous levels
There are dozens of stories of damaged vehicles (suspension, wheels, tyres, punctures) and unacceptable wear and tear
Businesses talk about the embarrassment they feel when customers comment, while others believe it is affecting their sales
With months of bad weather the underlying foundation is now also at risk - so, worse to come
There is a real health and safety risk as oncoming traffic seeks to avoid myriad pot holes
The Council says it will be fixed as part of the 'new bridge' works.
However the bridge planning is being held up in the courts for over 2 years. And other similar projects have been rejected outright by the courts so it may never happen! Even if it is permitted, it will be several more years before the bridge and the roads are completed.
In the meantime our road is falling apart and poses a daily risk to us all!
We urge you to convey your extreme frustration with the state of the R494 to our council and politicians (including election candidates) by signing this petition and spreading the word.
Thank You!
